Why did you initially decide to participate in this internship program?

Participating in the Cleveland Foundation’s summer internship program was a deliberate and exciting choice for me. The Cleveland Foundation is a major player in the nonprofit sector, known for its longstanding commitment to improving lives in Greater Cleveland. This program offered a unique chance to gain firsthand experience working with local nonprofit and public sector organizations. I was eager to see how the Cleveland Foundation collaborates with other organizations in town to address community needs and advance their mission of building a stronger, more connected community.

What was the most valuable aspect of your internship experience?

This summer, I interned at the Diaper Bank for Greater Cleveland as a Development Coordinator. My background in marketing made it easy to dive into the role, where I was involved in tasks ranging from fundraising campaigns and research to directly engaging with families on supply distribution days. The most rewarding part of my internship was working directly with families. Helping people with their basic needs and applying my skills to make a tangible difference was incredibly fulfilling. I also gained valuable insights into the issue of diaper need and its impact on children and mothers, which broadened my understanding of community health issues.

What was the most challenging aspect of your internship experience?

As a rising second-year student at Case Western Reserve University, studying Social Work and Nonprofit Organizations, this internship was a crucial opportunity for hands-on learning. It provided me with deeper insights into how nonprofits operate and utilize research and technology to deliver services effectively. Professionally, it helped me build skills and expand my network. Personally, it made me more culturally sensitive and aware of the diverse needs of people. The professional development sessions and interactions with my cohort were invaluable for networking and understanding Cleveland from a new perspective, especially as an international student.

How did this internship helped you grow professionally & personally?

Professionally, my skills in event management and community engagement have been significantly enhanced through doing voter registration pop-ups and showing up in the community to represent! Personally, the connections and friendships I have made within and outside of my host organization have been incredibly valuable and I’ve found more reasons to call Cleveland home!

Where would you take a friend who is visiting Cleveland for the first time?

If a friend were visiting Cleveland for the first time, I’d definitely show them Edgewater Beach for its beautiful views, various parks around the city, and University Circle—where I live and absolutely adore. University Circle boasts fantastic spots like the Museum of Art, the Botanical Gardens, and the Cultural Gardens. Cleveland has so much to offer, and these places are a great introduction to what the city is all about.

What advice would you give to someone considering applying for the Cleveland Foundation Summer Internship Program?

If you’re considering applying for the Cleveland Foundation Summer Internship Program, I wholeheartedly recommend it. It’s a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the nonprofit sector. Make sure to choose a host site that aligns with your interests and career goals, as this will make the experience more rewarding. Building strong relationships and networking are also key, so make the most of your time to connect with others and learn as much as possible.
Overall, this internship was an incredible experience that enriched my professional journey and personal growth.
