Why did you initially decide to participate in this internship program?

I initially found out about this opportunity through my career advisor at the Glenn College of Public Affairs, and it seemed like a perfect match for both my professional goals and personal values. Being able to better connect with the city of Cleveland and contribute meaningful social change within my own community was so unique that I just had to apply!

What was the most valuable aspect of your internship experience?

Collaborating with a dedicated team advocating for a more equitable Ohio through hands-on experience in the neighborhoods of Cleveland. Working in event management with the Young Latino Network has allowed me to meet and work with members to amplify the power of the community’s voice.

What was the most challenging aspect of your internship experience?

Aiding in the coordination of Noche de Guayabera, our largest fundraising event of the year, has been the most challenging and rewarding aspect because of all the different moving parts I had to keep track of to make sure the event went smoothly!

How did this internship helped you grow professionally & personally?

Professionally, my skills in event management and community engagement have been significantly enhanced through doing voter registration pop-ups and showing up in the community to represent! Personally, the connections and friendships I have made within and outside of my host organization have been incredibly valuable and I’ve found more reasons to call Cleveland home!

Where would you take a friend who is visiting Cleveland for the first time?

Seeing Lake Erie is a must when visiting Cleveland for the first time! Whether it’s Edgewater or another lookout area, having access to the lake is special about Cleveland. Stopping for coffee is a must, so I’ll take them to Cleveland’s first Mexican Coffee Shop, Dahlia Coffee, for some of the best coffee I’ve ever had!

What advice would you give to someone considering applying for the Cleveland Foundation Summer Internship Program?

My advice is to fully immerse yourself in the experience and take advantage of every learning opportunity that comes along. Be proactive, engage with your host site, the Cleveland Foundation, and the broader community to embrace the chance to learn and grow from every aspect of the program.
