Our #SummerOfPurpose blog series follows this year’s Cleveland Foundation Summer Interns as they reflect on 11 weeks spent working with Cleveland-area nonprofit and public sector organizations. In today’s blog, we hear from Delana Ray, who spent her summer at DigitalC supporting initiatives at the MidTown Tech Hive.
Name: Delana Ray
College: Kent State University
Hometown: Shaker Heights, Ohio
Internship Host Site: DigitalC
Why did you initially decide to participate in this internship program?
I decided to participate in this internship program because my long-term goal is to work in or even start my own nonprofit, focusing on marketing and communications to engage the community. When I saw a post about the Cleveland Foundation Summer Internship program a year ago, I knew it was a perfect opportunity to help me reach that goal. I was excited to apply, and once I researched more about the program, I realized how closely it aligned with what I wanted to achieve. I was eager to be placed in a nonprofit that would exceed my expectations and help me grow.
What was the most valuable aspect of your internship experience?
The most valuable aspect of my internship experience was getting to know the DigitalC team. From day one, Valerie, Jamie, Richard, and Jonathan helped me settle in, introduced me to the software, and communicated their expectations. I had the chance to work on projects that showcased my marketing and engagement skills while receiving helpful feedback. Over time, I realized they weren’t just colleagues, they became like family. Despite my short time there, they made me feel included in the work culture, and knowing that I have their support beyond the internship was incredibly comforting.
What was the most challenging aspect of your internship experience?
The most challenging aspect of my internship was adjusting to the work requirements that had to align with the organization’s guidelines and software. One of the platforms I wasn’t familiar with was HubSpot, so I had to get the hang of it. At first, I made some mistakes, like struggling with project management and not speaking up when I needed help. However, by the end, I learned to advocate for myself and ask for assistance or feedback when I needed it.
How did this internship helped you grow professionally & personally?
Professionally, this internship allowed me to build lasting connections with not only my host site but also the Cleveland Foundation team, my cohort, and the Campus Cleveland cohort. It provided me with invaluable experience in a nonprofit setting, helping me refine my communication and marketing skills and boosting my career development. Personally, it pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me more confident. I used to be hesitant about speaking up for myself, but by the end, I became comfortable sharing my thoughts and opinions without fear of judgment. I also developed stronger time management and problem-solving skills that have benefitted me both in and out of the workplace.
Where would you take a friend who is visiting Cleveland for the first time?
If a friend were visiting Cleveland for the first time, I’d love to take them on the Goodtime cruise so they could experience the beauty of the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie from a different perspective. After that, we’d have lunch at one of my favorite spots in the Flats, Shooters on the Water. To finish off the day, we’d grab a sweet treat at Malley’s Chocolates and Ice Cream Parlor, because you can’t visit Cleveland without a little bit of indulgence!
What advice would you give to someone considering applying for the Cleveland Foundation Summer Internship Program?
If someone is considering applying for the Cleveland Foundation Summer Internship program, my advice is to go for it with an open mind and willingness to learn. Be prepared to adapt to new environments, you’ll be working in a professional setting that will challenge you and help you grow. Don’t worry if you’re unfamiliar with certain software or tasks, the program is a great opportunity to build new skills. Most importantly, embrace every chance to network and connect with people, it’s an experience that will shape both your personal and professional development.
