More than 20 nonprofit organizations across Cuyahoga, Lake and Summit counties have partnered up to compete in the Adult Literacy XPRIZE Communities Competition as team Lit Fit NEO with the goal of qualifying for a $100,000 prize that will be allocated to adult literacy efforts.
With research showing that 77% of Americans now own a smartphone, the competition aims to dramatically change the way the U.S. meets the needs of the 36 million adults with low literacy skills, by tackling the largest obstacles to achieving basic literacy – access, retention and scale.
The XPRIZE Communities Competition incentivizes communities to recruit adult learners to download and use mobile apps selected as finalists in the $7M Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE presented by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. Each app demonstrated literacy gains in participating learners, who took a pre- and post-test in a 12-month field test in 2018. Teams that recruit the most app users by the competition end date on August 31, 2019 will be awarded funds to support adult education programming.
Did you know? Multiple neighborhoods throughout our community have low literacy rates; in some neighborhoods nearly 95% of residents are functionally illiterate. As Lit Fit NEO competes against other community teams nationwide, they need you to join the challenge to win this award and help our neighbors meet their educational goals! Follow these steps to help us end low literacy across Northeast Ohio:
- Download Learning Upgrade or Amrita Learning for free on your Android phone or tablet.
- Use the app with code 4422 once a day for at least three days to count toward the competition!
- Post a message to Twitter, Facebook or Instagram when you start and complete three days using #LitFitNEO for a chance to win a gift card.
