Our #CommonGroundCLE Conversations guest blog series showcases groups across Cuyahoga County hosting community conversations July 30 as part of our Common Ground event. Find out what Empowering Youth, Exploring Justice (EYEJ) is planning for their Common Ground conversation in this guest blog from the organization:
In our city and across the U.S., social justice is a timely and popular topic among all youth (not just at-risk youth!) Children and adolescents from every socio-economic background and school system, whether public or private, are affected by it and want to see change.
These youth are our future, our community. But “toxic stress” is an epidemic in Cleveland and issues such as racism, poverty and violence threaten the health and security of the young people who are the best qualified to create innovative solutions for the problems we face as a community.
EYEJ’s mission is to empower and amplify the voices of teens and pre-teens by bridging them with diverse individuals to engage in interactive discussions centered around social justice. We will be serving close to 1,000 students in the 2017-2018 school year with our Discussion Series, in which we cover important topics surrounding social justice with our youth, focused on social-emotional learning. We also have a new tool for educators that is currently in beta-testing –DiscussSocialJustice.com – for students around the world to discuss various social justice topics in a safe, membership-based online platform.
We present this #CommonGroundCLE event in partnership with Plymouth Church UCC and the Cleveland Foundation to discuss social justice and the future of our community’s young people. EYEJ started out of Plymouth Church in 2013.
Please join us as Shaker Heights youth lead multiple discussions surrounding social justice in an open, safe and intergenerational environment. You can register here, as the event is FREE, but with limited slots. Lunch will be provided.
